Own the Blame

A Senate committee yesterday conducted hearings designed to beat up on the domestic gasoline providers. If the corporations are making a profit, according to Congress, then the corporations must be stealing from joe six-pack. Congress fails to understand or perhaps just openly acknowledge one thing: this legislative body CONTINUES to PREVENT oil exploration and harvesting from Anwar and off shore drilling in several spots off the US coast. For that failure, Congress needs to take responsibility.

Congress refuses to permit domestic oil exploration, blames corporations from taking profits, threatens suit against OPEC, demands that President Bush command the Saudis to give us more oil and, oh, by the way, remove our troops from Iraq. Domestic oil exploration would provide this country with a supply of oil. We all realize that oil is a non-renewable resource and that we would exhaust this supply. Do we have a choice? No, not really. Congress has proposed suing OPEC. Great! Make them mad and they will send us LESS OIL not more. This is a sound strategy if you want to forcibly reduce our reliance on oil.

President Bush asked that the Saudis provide more oil. The Saudis said no. Is Congress proposing the we invade Saudi Arabia if they persist? Sounds like it. An ironic potential result considering that the Democrats want troops removed from Iraq immediately if not sooner. We could just move them to Saudia Arabia and take their oil. Whether or not one agrees with the premise that marked the US entry into Iraq, the current situation must be analyzed beyond the myopic views of why we entered. The potential for Iran to fill the vacuum left by the US in Iraq could be devastating to our oil dependence as well as our economy, unless this country takes action to obtain an independent source of oil which is controlled by the US.

Congress should take responsibility for FAILING to permit domestic oil exploration and retrieval. Own the Blame and FIX IT. Stop posturing during your money wasting dog and pony shows. We need these corporations to fund the energy research that Congress has willfully failed to do since the energy crisis of the 70’s. Tomorrow is here. This country faces serious issues that will not be resolved by blaming corporations while Congress does NOTHING to resolve the issues. This country should be the captain of its own future-at this point, the ship has a leak and Congress is busy blaming others instead of fixing the leak. The leak will expand unless repaired.
